Synopsis

… I’ll cry if I want to.

Oh boy, another birthday …

Karen could be excused for crying on her birthday, especially as it’s the first one since her husband got on a plane to the States and never came back. Then there’s the fact that her workmates were practically bribed to attend her birthday meal. But when a restaurant double booking leads to her sharing a table with single dad Elliot and his daughter, things start looking up.

As Karen gets to know Elliot she experiences feelings she thought she’d never have again. But is it enough? Or will the thing that destroyed Karen’s previous relationship also ruin things with Elliot?

Hannah Pearl won the Books and the City Heatseeker short story competition, in partnership with Heat magazine in 2017 for her short story The Last Good Day.

The last thing newly divorced Karen wants is a party to celebrate her 40th birthday, she’d rather stay quietly at home by herself.
When her best friend arranges a birthday dinner for her at a local restaurant,
Karen meets Elliot who, with his daughter, is also celebrating his 40th birthday. Karen soon becomes deeply involved in both Elliot and Sophie’s lives. But there is something that Karen has always longed for that might drive Elliot away.
A great cast of characters with many laughs along the way. Elliot’s teenage daughter Sophie is a star and I wonder if she’ll feature in a future book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book – I read it all in one evening! The story is about Karen, a just 40 year old teacher, recovering from a fairly traumatic marriage breakup, who meets Elliot – same age, and a Child Counsellor, with an 18 yr old daughter Sophie who he has brought up on his own. There was very little extraneous description to detract from the flow of the story, and all the characters are likeable (even the ex to a certain extent), Karen was very believable and I felt some sympathy with her situation, with Elliot being a most suitable hero as far as I am concerned. I have to say the ending was perhaps a bit predictable, but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as a good read.

This is a lovely romance between Karen and Elliott. The story starts with their joint 40th birthday party and romps along from there for a year. The regained independence of Karen makes her a ideal partner for Elliott as he undertakes his stressful work with children. Karen’s desire for her own child is the link throughout the story and is well written with great feeling. Although in parts this is sad the love and fun shine through. The happy ending is there but not before some serious issues have been resolved. Open some chocolate and enjoy the read.

Karen meets Elliot on the night of her 40th birthday – due to a mix-up on reservations they end up sharing a table and the start of a love story. This is a sweet story between two great people that you root for to be together. Karen has had a rough time of it and deserves a nice guy like Elliot. If you are looking for a sweet love story, you’ve found it! Highly recommend it!!
