Synopsis
It was meant to be a romantic Christmas getaway …
Except Flora’s boyfriend Paul is more interested in whether there’s WiFi in their holiday cottage than he is in the pretty village of Padcock where it’s located. It seems he’s incapable of taking time out from his work for gossip mag darling Maxine Marling – or Maxine Marmoset as Flora not so secretly calls her (well, she does look like a marmoset!) – to spend time with his actual girlfriend.
But as Flora discovers the friendly and festive community of Padcock with its eccentric but lovable locals – including dreamy musician Geraint Davies – she begins to question her London life and lots more besides. Especially as a certain marmoset becomes ever more present on her Christmas break for two …
But luckily Padcock is a village where fresh starts happen – and maybe Flora is in line for her own Christmas of new beginnings.

Kirsty Ferry
Kirsty Ferry is from the North East of England and lives there with her husband and son. She won the English Heritage/Belsay Hall National Creative Writing competition and has had articles and short stories published in various magazines. Her work also appears in several anthologies, incorporating such diverse themes as vampires, crime, angels and more.
Kirsty loves writing ghostly mysteries and interweaving fact and fiction. The research is almost as much fun as writing the book itself, and if she can add a wonderful setting and a dollop of history, that’s even better.
Her day job involves sharing a building with an eclectic collection of ghosts, which can often prove rather interesting.

This is the third in Kirsty’s Padcock series, and although they can stand alone – it is nice to have read the others – you catch up with a few earlier characters in this one. Geraint had needed a good shake in the earlier books – but he has certainly improved here – you know he is going to be important from the start. A worthy addition to Kirsty’s portfolio, which is growing apace – keep writing them Kirsty – I’ll keep reading them!
A 5-star sofa book.
Kirsty Ferry’s follow up from her previous book set in Padcock, it helps to read the first book to recognise some of the characters, but not really essential.
As an early Christmas present to herself and her boyfriend, Flora books a country cottage for a short romantic break. On their arrival at Bookend Cottage, architect Paul stays glued to his phone or is on a video link with his overly demanding client, a social media darling who’s sharp features and squeaky voice have encouraged Flora to rename her Maxine Marmoset.
Constantly ignored, Flora sets out to investigate the village by herself and meets Cerys and her brother Geraint in the tea rooms. Talented musician Geraint took a minor role as a rejected lover in the previous book, now he has a starring role.
With Paul dancing attendance to his obnoxious client’s every whim, this leaves Flora to enjoy the Christmas festivities that Padcock offers.
Amusing and entertaining. A lighthearted and enjoyable read, not just for Christmas.
I loved this story from start to finish. Flora gets dumped on Christmas Eve, which she then has to spend alone. Vowing not to repeat the experience she makes pre Christmas holiday plans in Padcock Village with her new, dreamy boyfriend, Paul, only to find out that he’s more interested in getting wifi and sorting out work than he is in exploring the area or spending quality time with her. Can Padcock work its magic or is Flora doomed to spend another Christmas alone?
Such a fun story with great characters. You’ll want to visit Padcock after reading this! It’s a perfect standalone story as well as being the 3rd in the Padcock Village series.

A lovely, gentle story which highlights how easy it is to fall for the wrong man! Flora is trying to have a happy Christmas but fate is not kind to her. Her recovery is the story and how her Christmas visit to Padcock marks a change in her situation. Although it is set pre Christmas it isn’t a Christmas story as such, but some Christmas magic is in evidence. A glass of mulled wine and some chocolate to hand and catch some of the magic yourself.
