Synopsis

A gut-wrenching story not for the faint-hearted!

There’s no smoke without fire …

Jess has always held a candle for Dex – so when he comes back into her life after a school reunion, she couldn’t be happier.

But something happened to Dex before he mysteriously left the area all those years before – something that still gives him terrible nightmares and makes him seem cold and distant.

And then there are the rumours – rumours that Jess can’t bring herself to believe. But when the truth finally comes out, can Jess be the one to help Dex fight the demons from his past before they consume him completely?

Hannah Pearl won the Books and the City Heatseeker short story competition, in partnership with Heat magazine in 2017 for her short story The Last Good Day.

5* An engrossing mystery with a twist at the end.
With an eye-catching cover, this author certainly delivers drama. Hannah Pearl cleverly starts the story slowly and clearly to introduce the characters and set the scene.
At a school reunion Jess meets her old boyfriend Dex for the first time since he disappeared without warning ten years ago. Their feelings for each other are still the same, but Dex is deeply troubled and Jess is determined to help him. What happened to him all those years ago? Time for Jess and her friends to do some detective work.
This book is described as ‘gut-wrenching story not for the fainthearted’, don’t worry, there are explanations but without elaborate details that might upset a nervous reader.

This is a seriously dark book despite it’s opening pages which lead you into the maze of Dex’s past. Jess is beginning to renew her friendships from her youth following her return to her childhood home when events centred around her old school bring her face to face with her first love. She is a fighter and all her strengths are needed to cover him to her last love. Horrors abound in his past which she must, and does, deal with. A well written, perceptive book which leaves you thinking. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, but a good stash of chocolate will help you get to the final, happy ending.

I enjoyed reading this, it was not the usual type of romance and dealt with some difficult topics. It took a while to take off, and then raced through to the finish, keeping me reading. Although it is shorter than some stories, the main backstory was well detailed, helping to build the tension, and the complicated past relationships felt true to life and believable. There was a real sense of creepy menace and a dramatic conclusion which made a compelling and unputdownable story.
